Peanuts and Sorghum

We went on a field trip to Chippokes Farm to learn about harvesting peanuts and sorghum. I have never seen a peanut plant! Very cool. The shoot comes out of the ground first and then goes back down under ground where the peanuts will grow! We got to see the “old” way of harvesting peanuts. The hard way! The kids were able to try their hand at the pitch fork 🙂 We even tasted a peanut fresh out of the ground and some freshly made peanut butter! YUM! Next we went over to the Sorghum field. We knocked the leaves off of the plant and then took our stalks over to the sorghum press. The kids turned the wheel and the juice was collected in a big pot. It was then boiled for five hours until it becomes ready to eat. It is similar to molasses. I took a few pictures of the homeschool experience 🙂
